Helen Mirren will portray the wife of Leo Tolstoy in a forthcoming biopic about the great Russian writer entitled The Last Station.
Helen is to star as Sofia Tolstoy opposite Christopher Plummer, who has been cast as the War and Peace author. They replace Meryl Streep and Anthony Hopkins, who had previously been announced in the roles.
The Last Station will describe the tumultuous final year in the life of Tolstoy and his troubled marriage. The movie will be directed by Michael Hoffman, who previously shot the 1999 film adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream and the 1995 costume drama Restoration. The production is an adaptation of the eponymous 1990 book by Jay Parini and begins filming in Germany next week.

Anyone as yet have any idea when this production will wrap? I'll go to any length and pay virtually any price to see Helen--and indeed Chris Plummer--in this one, a film that'll doubtless prove yet another gem for these legendary actors.
I see that the primary filming is slated to take place in Germany, though I'm similarly wondering if Russian authorities and film crew have given thought to capturing at least a few scenes from the very grounds on which Tolstoy lived and loved most--beautiful, birch-dotted Yasnaya Polyana.
If HMAS moderators soon access more info on the making of this film and the projected date of completion, I would greatly appreciate hearing updates.

i wouldnt have a clue to when the film will wrap but i think dame mirren will do wonderfully in this film if meryl streep can do it so can dame mirren.

Helen always takes her craft as an actor seriously, so expect another fine performance as Sofia Tolstoy. This film will be one to see in 2009.
